GBI is currently investigating an officer-involved shooting that took place in Glynn County, Georgia. As reported by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation's official press release, the incident unfolded on Monday, when Glynn County Police Department officers were in pursuit of 51-year-old Shannon Melvin Tanner, a suspect in an armed robbery case.
The confrontation occurred after officers located Tanner in his vehicle on Georgia Highway 99. According to the GBI press release, Tanner attempted to evade arrest by driving his car towards a detective's police vehicle, prompting the detective to inappropriately fire at the approaching car. Neither Tanner nor the detective sustained injuries during this exchange.
The pursuit continued until Tanner was involved in a single car accident on Interstate 95. He was subsequently taken to a local hospital for medical attention following the crash. It was confirmed that no officers were harmed during the incident. The GBI has taken over the investigation to ensure an independent review of the circumstances.
