Vehicle-free days are set to return to Cades Cove in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park this June, according to recent announcements by park officials. The initiative, which allows pedestrians and cyclists uncompromised access to the scenic 11-mile Cades Cove Loop Road, will resume on June 18 and is planned to continue every Wednesday through September 24, as reported by WVLT.
For more than four decades, the park has set days for visitors to enjoy the loop road without the presence of motor vehicles. This tradition, as WBIR states, evolved from being available only on Wednesday and Saturday mornings to encompassing full days starting from a 2020 pilot project which aims to provide an extended peaceful retreat for nature enthusiasts.
The park provided several guidelines for those planning to partake in these vehicle-free Wednesdays. Cyclists are reminded to wear a helmet and adhere to the speed limit of 20 miles per hour. Parking is limited and visitors are encouraged to use designated spots to avoid disruption to the ecosystems. With no cell service in the area, adequate preparation, including the packing of essential supplies like food, water, and a first aid kit, is advised. Furthermore, per WVLT's report, Class 1 and Class 2 E-bikes are permitted, while Class 3 E-bikes and other motorized devices are not.
There was initially some uncertainty about the start date of the vehicle-free days, which historically began in May, but after staffing and organizational adjustments stemming from federal orders and court rulings, the program was pushed to start in June. As Knox News reported, these changes are a direct result of policies from the Trump administration. Park managers are continuously working to maintain the balance between preserving natural habitats and providing visitors with memorable experiences.
