Miami-Dade County officials put the first ceremonial shovels into the ground for the new Grand Hyatt Miami Beach Convention Center Hotel, a project envisioning a boost in tourism and local economic growth. In attendance at the groundbreaking were Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, Commissioners Eileen Higgins and Micky Steinberg, and representatives from the City of Miami Beach and Hyatt Hotels Corporation. According to a press release by Miami-Dade County, the County has invested $75 million into the initiative, aimed at launching a new era for the region's hospitality and convention industry.
Mayor Levine Cava marked the occasion by reflecting on the significance of these infrastructural advancements. "Groundbreakings like this one inspire me because we are shaping the future today," she told Miami-Dade County's news page. With a record 28.2 million visitors last year and generating over $31.1 billion, the hotel is not just a building, but a stake in the claim of Miami-Dade's continued prosperity. Once operational in late 2027, the 17-story development will feature 800 rooms and direct access to Miami Beach Convention Center, potentially captivates larger conventions and international events.
Commissioner Higgins highlighted the broader implications of the hotel’s construction, emphasizing the positivity beyond the physical structure. "Hotels like the Grand Hyatt represent more than just building a place to stay in—it is about building opportunity," said Higgins. The project is expected to significantly bolster the local economy by providing various employment opportunities and enhancing the overall experience for visitors to Miami Beach, as per Miami Dade County.
Reflecting on the hotel's journey from inception to commencement, Commissioner Steinberg expressed a sense of personal and civic fulfillment. “Today was a full circle moment for me,” Steinberg told journalists. Signaling initial resident support during her previous role at the Miami Beach Commission, she now celebrates the promise of transformation the hotel brings to the city, and the benefits it is destined to unlock for the local community and the tourism sector. The Grand Hyatt will join a series of infrastructure upgrades in the county that includes a multi-billion dollar overhaul of Miami International Airport and the recently inaugurated largest cruise terminal in the country at PortMiami.
Funding and support for the development come from a strong partnership including Turnberry, Terra Group, Hyatt Hotels Corporation, and the City of Miami Beach, with backing from the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau. As Miami Beach vies to stay ahead in a competitive global market, such collaborations signify the city's commitment to evolving its allure, both as a tourist hotspot and as a hub for major international conventions.
