A fatal shooting tragedy unfolded at a Hialeah apartment complex yesterday afternoon, when Yoendris Campos, a 33-year-old man initially visiting a friend, was killed following what appeared to be a neighbor dispute. According to the Hialeah Police Department, the shooting took place in the 700 block of East 9th Street and claimed the life of Campos, who had arrived from Cuba seven years ago and is survived by a young daughter, as detailed by CBS News Miami. The accused shooter, 55-year-old Pedro Blanco, has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with the incident.
Campos's family is reeling from the loss; his cousin Braulio, in a statement to CBS News Miami, expressed the depth of their grief, "He was everything to me. He was my cousin but he taught me everything," and insisted that justice be served, saying, "He has to pay. The man who did this has to pay."
The sequence of events, as reported by Hialeah Police, began when Blanco knocked on the door of the apartment Campos was visiting and, after momentarily leaving upon receiving no answer, he turned back as Campos answered the door and fired a single lethal shot; this account was corroborated by information from NBC Miami.
The shooting has been deemed isolated by the Hialeah police, claiming it originated from a neighbor dispute and presented no ongoing threat to public safety. Neighbors were reported by CBS News Miami to have heard a single gunshot and one expressed the fear gripping the community,"I was scared. We saw a lot of cops running and then they ran upstairs to the apartment above. I didn't dare go outside. I got goosebumps. Luckily, my son was here." The incident has led to increased police presence, with the area being cordoned off while detectives conducted their investigation.
Authorities have indicated that the investigation is ongoing, and additional details are expected to be released as the case progresses.
