It's not every day you see a World War II-era seaplane making its way through the streets, but when the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) is involved, unusual sights become part of the job. Recently, ADOT had the task of overseeing the transport of the immense Philippine Mars seaplane to the Pima Air and Space Museum in Tucson, a logistical endeavor that required both precision and coordination. The aircraft's journey entailed disassembly and transportation of massive parts, with the fuselage alone measuring up to a remarkable 26.5 feet tall, more than 137 feet long, and 15 feet wide.
In an effort to safeguard state and local roads, and ensure minimal interruption to drivers, ADOT's permit process is strict and detailed. The transport of the Philippine Mars, a load so sizeable, it brought its own set of challenges, had crews working through the night, when the roads are quietest, to prevent disrupting the flow of traffic.
According to ADOT, the herculean fuselage was hauled under a Class C permit, requiring law enforcement escorts and teams tasked with the alteration of utility lines when necessary. This process included a meticulous trek along Bell Road in the Northwest Valley and State Route 85 near Buckeye, culminating with its arrival at the museum on the early morning hours of May 17. ADOT Permits Tech Christina Pippin stated, "This was definitely one of the more unusual loads we’ve permitted in recent years."
The private company handling the shipment was in charge of communication, ensuring all involved parties, such as ADOT, and local governments were kept in the loop regarding potential schedule and route adjustments. "In 2024, our office successfully processed over 6,500 oversized load permit applications," Courtney Mower, ADOT’s statewide permit services manager, mentioned. Despite not being on the road with the shipments, the permit technicians’ expertise plays a crucial role in a safe and efficient delivery.
