Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s recent visit to Springfield sparked controversy as she criticized Illinois’s sanctuary policies in the wake of a tragic murder. Noem used the front lawn of a bereaved family's home to decry the policies of Gov. JB Pritzker, suggesting the governor is protective of criminals within the sanctuary jurisdictions, as reported by the Chicago Sun-Times. According to Noem, Pritzker doesn’t seem to mind if "gangbangers, if murderers, rapists and pedophiles roll free in his state."
Noem, in her address, detailed the case of 24-year-old Emma Shafer, who authorities believe was murdered by Gabriel Calixto Pichardo, a man not legally present in the U.S and whose DACA status had expired following a felony conviction, as per the Chicago Sun-Times. Pichardo is currently a fugitive. Noem's comments did not sit well with all, as protestors, including Shafer's friends, accused her of exploiting the tragedy for a "racist agenda."
Amidst the heated discourse, Pritzker's office mocked Noem's approach, making light of her actions by alluding to her previous television appearances and suggesting that reporters "capture her latest costume upon arrival," as stated by CBS News Chicago. Moreover, the office highlighted what they perceive as previous instances where the Trump Administration ignored constitutional due process rights.
Pritzker himself responded to Noem's accusations by emphasizing his support for the deportation of violent criminals without documentation, striking back against the portrayal of his policies by the Homeland Security Secretary. "I want to be clear about what my position is and what the law is. If there are violent criminals who have been convicted of violent crimes, who are undocumented, they are supposed to be deported," Pritzker said in January, as quoted in the Chicago Sun-Times.
