West Palm Beach has witnessed the return of a local landmark, as the venerated LGTBQ+ bar, HG Roosters, has once again opened its doors to the public after a prolonged closure. The bar, which holds the title of the oldest gay bar in the state, had been shuttered for half a decade following a devastating fire. Yesterday, a ribbon-cutting ceremony marked its official revival.
The reopening was a significant milestone not just for the establishment but also for the community it serves. As reported by CBS12, the significance of HG Roosters extends beyond its nightlife offerings; it's a designated historic site. The return to operation also brings with it extended operating hours; the bar will now remain open from 3 p.m. to 3 a.m. Sunday through Thursday and until 4 a.m. on weekends.
Details of the restoration highlight an extensive $2.5 million renovation that required almost completely rebuilding the premises. Key public figures, including City of West Palm Beach Commission President Christina Lambert and Palm Beach County Commissioner Gregg Weiss, attended the reopening, signaling the local government's support. A multitude of community members and patrons were present, filling the newly refurbished dining and bar areas, validating the bar's place in the local social fabric, according to The Palm Beach Post.
Despite the renewal, the original cause of the fire that led to the lengthy closure of HG Roosters remains a mystery. Nevertheless, the owner, A.J. Wasson, and attendees alike looked forward to making up for lost time. Patrons packed the dining tables, and bar was the scene captured during the reopening. Among the attendees was Kitty Valentine of West Palm Beach, who was seen adjusting her hair during the celebrations.
