Illinois is getting an injection of pride and, well, some pretty significant cash. Governor JB Pritzker and the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) have announced five new State-Designated Cultural Districts. This move is part of a program aimed at boosting economic development while preserving the unique historical and cultural fabric of communities throughout the state. "People in cities and towns across the state have vibrant cultural identities, and through the State-Designated Cultural Districts program we're helping them preserve their history and traditions while promoting economic development," Pritzker said, according to the official state press release.

The cultural districts, which are a mix of communities, towns, or specific geographic areas, have distinctive cultural and historical identities that bind them. Besides fostering economic development, these areas focus on preserving important structures and traditions, fostering local cultural development, and creating educational opportunities. Governor Pritzker underlined that these districts reflect "the diversity of our great state," with the program specifically tailored to prevent displacement while promoting equitable growth, as per the State of Illinois.

Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton lauded the initiative, noting, "These new cultural district designations will showcase and celebrate their diversity while driving the local economy forward." Meanwhile, Senate President Don Harmon was all cheers for the opportunity these entities bring to Illinois, stating, "I look forward to supporting the designees as they continue their important work," as stated by the State of Illinois.

Embracing cultural identity seems to be, frankly, a win-win for the cities and towns involved. State's cultural districts are not only getting recognition but also the resources to grow and keep their histories alive. Among the entities celebrating their inclusion this year is Rockford, with House Assistant Majority Leader Maurice West expressing pride for his city being among the honorees. "We are always eager to celebrate the cultural contributions of our most historic cities and towns throughout Illinois," West said, the State of Illinois noted.
