Illinois is in full celebration mode this May, marking the occasion of World Trade Month with a look at its booming export numbers. The state is riding high on the back of another record-breaking year, with export figures topping out at over $81 billion in 2024. This reflects a 2.5% increase from the previous year, and a notable 32% rise since 2019, as reported by the State of Illinois.
The state's geographical advantage plays a pivotal role, providing access to key transportation like airports, railways, and ports. The infrastructure and central location have attracted more than 2,600 international companies to Illinois. Governor JB Pritzker credited the state's workforce and trade relationships for the growth, particularly in the face of uncertainties spurred by "Trump's reckless tariffs," according to a statement made by the official news outlet of the Illinois government.
Trade missions and new agreements are part of the state's strategy to forge stronger foreign ties. Governor Pritzker has notably signed Memorandum of Understandings (MOUs) with the United Kingdom and Mexico. Such initiatives are hailed by DCEO Director Kristin Richards, who told the State of Illinois that the state is "committed to creating and expanding international relationships" that will bring about new economic development and job opportunities.
Moreover, Illinois is leveraging programs like the Illinois State Trade and Export Promotion (ISTEP) to provide businesses with the resources for international expansion, assisting in efforts from establishing a foreign trade show presence to growing e-commerce operations. This initiative is seen as a vital component in increasing sales, job creation, and fortifying Illinois' standing in the global market. The Office of Trade and Investment, equipped with six regional foreign offices has been a catalyst in assisting over 1,600 company trade missions to various countries worldwide, ultimately supporting approximately 800,000 jobs in the state, per the official news source.
