Firefighters from the Indianapolis Fire Department were dispatched to a fire that broke out on the 37th floor of the Salesforce Tower, located near Monument Circle in downtown Indianapolis, as smoke alarms sounded just after 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, WTHR reports. The fire, restricted to two rooms and a ceiling, was quickly brought under control by the building's sprinkler system, assisting the firefighters in their efforts to extinguish the blaze within 30 minutes.
Smoke was initially detected on the 36th and 37th floors, leading to an escalated response by the fire department. "Given the size of the building that dictates the size of our response," IFD Battalion Chief Patrick Harper stated in an interview obtained by WTHR. The incident resulted in several block closures near the intersection of Meridian Street and Ohio Street while crews worked on cleanup and investigative operations.
The Salesforce Tower, an iconic 48-story skyscraper and the tallest building in Indiana, has not reported any injuries from the incident. The fire department has credited the effectively functioning sprinklers for containing the fire and minimizing potential damage, as noted by both Fox 59 and WISH-TV. While the offices were void of people at the time of the fire, the Indianapolis Fire Department remains focused on clearing the smoke and ensuring the building's safety.
