The envisioned future of Indianapolis sports may soon come into clearer focus as the Capital Improvement Board (CIB) embarks on negotiations with renowned design firm Populous for a new soccer stadium. Announced earlier this week, Populous has been selected to conceptualize the proposed $220 million athletic venue that could potentially house an MLS team in downtown Indy. A CIB spokesperson outlined the plan, saying, "The CIB is negotiating a design services contract with Populous for the development of a soccer-first, outdoor, natural playing surface stadium," as FOX59 reported.
This move to possibly bring major league soccer to Indianapolis aligns with ambitions previously hinted at by Mayor Joe Hogsett. However, a firm confirmation on whether the stadium is part of a larger strategy to attract an MLS team has not been provided by the CIB. Initial consultations have just begun," a CIB spokesperson mentioned in a statement obtained by WTHR.
Populous is no stranger to the Indianapolis architectural and sporting landscape. They hold an established track record, having worked on the 2022 renovation of Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Their portfolio extends globally, with standout projects including the Sphere in Las Vegas and stadiums for the 2016 and 2020 Summer Olympic Games. In Indianapolis, they've been responsible for the design of Butler University Esports Park and the NBA 2k League Broadcast Arena.
The potential stadium project carries significant anticipation for its role in invigorating local sports culture and economy, acting perhaps as a catalyst for future urban development. "The potential of this new soccer stadium brings the city a step closer to bringing in a Major League Soccer team," the CIB spokesperson added in an email to WRTV. As the populace waits, the detailed outlines of the stadium are set to emerge once the negotiation and design processes advance.
