Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers, employing drone technology, made swift work of apprehending two juvenile robbery suspects over the weekend. In a statement posted on the IMPD News Facebook page, IMPD reported the arrest following an attempted robbery on the 1400 block of N Bosart Avenue on Saturday.
The victim, who was accosted by a group of juveniles as he got into his car, detailed how the perpetrators tried to take his car keys and pull him out of his vehicle. According to the social media post, one assailant even attempted entry through the passenger window to snatch the victim's cellphone and wallet. After the victim secured himself in the car,, the juveniles fled. A description provided by the victim allowed officers in the vicinity to be on the lookout for the suspects.
Using a drone piloted by an East District IMPD operator, the suspects were located in the nearby area shortly after the incident. The IMPD News post detailed how the drone operator relayed the exact position of the suspects to the officers on the ground, who then apprehended them without further confrontation.
"Drone technology significantly enhances our ability to safely and efficiently locate suspects, missing persons, and critical evidence from the air," IMPD Chief Chris Bailey said in the Facebook post. "This tool not only increases officer safety but also gives us a tactical edge during high-risk and dynamic situations." The use of technology like drones represents a growing trend in law enforcement practices to mitigate risks and enhance operational efficiency.
After the suspects were detained, IMPD robbery detectives took over the investigation, reviewing the evidence, witness statements, and nearby video footage which corroborated that the detained individuals were indeed the suspects. Out of the group, two juveniles were arrested for robbery, while the others were released. The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office is set to decide on the final charges.
