An investigation has been opened into the death of a man while in the custody of Pittsburgh Police early this morning. The incident followed an encounter with officers after the man was reportedly seen acting erratically and walking in and out of traffic. According to a CBS News Pittsburgh report, the man was initially found trying to enter a police vehicle at the intersection of Saw Mill Run Boulevard and Warrington Avenue around 3 a.m.. He was taken to the ground after refusing police commands.
As reported by WTAE, the man exited a vehicle and left running in a business's parking lot before walking away and drifting into a building. Following this, he attempted to get into a pickup truck but was dragged by the truck toward Warrington Avenue when it drove off. The Allegheny County Police Department has urged witnesses to come forward with any information by calling their tip line, hoping to shed light on the events leading up to the man's death.
After being subdued and placed in custody, officers noticed the man had head injuries and what appeared to be road rash, a statement confirmed by the Allegheny County Police Department. Medical services were called to the scene, where the man subsequently went into cardiac arrest and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
