Janice Blackshear, who has built her career within the Georgia Department of Corrections, will soon take on new responsibilities as the Deputy Warden of Security at Central State Prison, as officially announced by Commissioner Tyrone Oliver. Starting May 16, Blackshear will supervise security staff and manage the containment of 1,152 male offenders, a significant mandate that speaks to the trust the GDC places in her abilities.
"Janice has worked her way up through the ranks, demonstrating exceptional leadership qualities along the way," Oliver remarked in a statement obtained by the official press release. This sentiment underscores Blackshear's journey from a Correctional Officer in 2007 to her upcoming role as Deputy Warden. Her tenure has included a progression from Sergeant, to Lieutenant, to positions of increasing management responsibility.
Blackshear's advancement in ranks is paralleled by her commitment to education. She is currently enrolled at Southern Crescent Technical College, where she's pursuing an associate's degree in criminal justice. Her extensive on-the-job training includes a variety of programs focused on correctional management and supervision that have prepared her for her new leadership role, as detailed by the Georgia Department of Corrections.
Blackshear's background is not limited to correctional facility management. Her service extends beyond the walls of Georgia's prisons, reaching back to a time when she served in the United States Navy. As a Desert Storm veteran, she brings a unique perspective forged in the crucibles of military service, further enriching the font of experience she draws upon in her correctional career.
