Chicago's 16th (Jefferson Park) District is gearing up for a DUI Saturation Patrol this weekend, kicking off from 6:00 p.m. on Friday, and going through until 2:00 a.m. Saturday morning. To deter unsafe driving behaviors, the patrol is designed to thoroughly monitor traffic for potential impairments due to alcohol or drugs. The initiative also aims to strictly enforce speed, alcohol-related, and safety belt violations.
As part of the enforcement strategy, police will use vehicles that are equipped for detecting speed to quickly identify and apprehend those who choose to recklessly ignore speed limits. Moreover, the Breath Alcohol Testing (BAT) Mobile Unit is on standby, ready to expedite the DUI charging process right there on the roadside, without having to first transport suspects to the lockup for bonding. It's also set up to seemingly effortlessly issue Individual Recognizance Bonds (I-Bonds) at the site.
These saturation patrols are not a novel tactic in Chicago's battle against DUI offenses. The Chicago Police Department reported results from a previous patrol in the 1st (Central) District, which occurred on May 23-24, 2025. The operation yielded a total of 41 citations, nine of which were for speeding, but resulted in zero DUI arrests.
Offenses during that earlier patrol included 17 unsafe vehicle violations and a single incident each for insurance violations, no driver's license, and driving while using a cellphone. In addition, officers documented two driver's license violations and three seat belt violations, emphasizing the vigilant eye the department keeps on various driving infractions.
