Jerome F. Gorgon, Jr., a seasoned federal prosecutor, has been named the Interim U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan, a title he formally took on after being sworn in by Chief United States District Court Judge Sean F. Cox. This development comes as announced by U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi. Gorgon, who has now taken the helm as the district's principal federal law enforcement officer, will oversee federal criminal and civil litigation affecting approximately 6.5 million residents in the area.
Gorgon's career has spanned over 15 years in the Detroit area, where he's tackled a variety of cases, ranging from terrorism to violent crime, and from sex trafficking to carjacking. A figure deeply rooted in the Detroit community, Gorgon was educated at the University of Michigan and even spent time teaching elementary science in Detroit Public Schools before forging his path in law. His time after law school was split between clerking for notable judges and making partner at Honigman LLP before he returned to public service with the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
As the top federal prosecutor in the Eastern District, Gorgon leads a large team. He's at the forefront, guiding roughly 190 prosecutors, civil litigators, and support personnel. His prior experience in prosecuting complex cases has prepared him for this wide-reaching role, which now places him as an intermediary between the community and the justice system.
Having maintained his ties to Detroit, Gorgon's local upbringing and professional journey suggest a familiarity with the community he is now tasked to protect and serve. He graduated from Southwestern High School and, despite his tenure away within prestigious legal circles, Gorgon continues to consider Detroit his home. This new position appears to be a professional elevation and a continuation of his commitment to a region that has shaped him personally and professionally.
