As Mother's Day approaches, Las Cruces is gearing up to celebrate with a free, family-friendly concert featuring the acclaimed musical group Darren Cordova y Calor, as announced by the City of Las Cruces Parks and Recreation Department. The event is scheduled for 5 p.m. on May 11 at Plaza de Las Cruces, inviting the community to honor mothers through a shared experience of live music and dancing.
Fronted by the award-winning Darren Cordova, the group has made significant strides since its formation in 1989, with Cordova and his family creating a dynamic that resonated with many, according to the City of Las Cruces. After sweeping the 2015 New Mexico Hispanic Music Awards, where they garnered recognition as Male Vocalist, Song of the Year, Band of the Year, CD of the Year, and earning the title for Traditional Ranchera Song of the Year one sees their impact, their breadth in the musical heritage of the Hispanic community.
The public is not only encouraged to enjoy the melodies of hits like "Mi Amigo," "Cantinero," and "Que Levante la Mano", but also to partake in the communal revelry by bringing chairs, families, and, of course, mothers to the Plaza while local food trucks offer a variety of culinary delights. The announcement highlighted that Darren Cordova y Calor's performance sets the stage for the City's live music season, ushering in events such as the Mayor's Jazz Fest on May 25 and the highly anticipated Music in the Park Series.
The Sunday concerts, beginning Memorial Day weekend and lasting until August, promise to bring together a diverse array of local and regional acts set to be announced in the weeks to come, and if history is any teacher, they will offer the community not just a series of performances but a chance to connect through the rhythms of shared harmony, dance, and the kind of joy that seems ever so necessary in these times, as per City of Las Cruces.
