Motorists and regular commuters should brace for ongoing construction as the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) advances with the east approach reconstruction of 56th Street at Pendleton Pike, a key piece of the larger US 36 Pendleton Pike project slated to extend into late 2025. Despite the disruptive work, local enterprises like Crew Car Wash, White Castle, and ALDI are maintaining operations, easy to access from Pendleton Pike as pointed out in a city announcement, according to the City of Lawrence.
The City of Lawrence's dispatch, recently shared, affirms Never Enough Storage can still be approached from 56th Street, while Poindexter Drive remains partially unhindered permitting only right turns onto 56th Street, maintaining some traffic fluidity during the meticulous construction process. Local commerce is feeling the choke of construction; however, establishments have their doors wide open, an earnest plea to the community reiterates: "Please continue to support these businesses—they’re open and ready to serve you!"
Looking ahead, one should mark their calendars as late May or early June signals the west side of 56th Street's closure—a planned 45-day span reconstructing its own stretch. While transit disruptions are imminent, INDOT's work is essential in paving the way for improved transportation corridors that, upon completion, promise smooth rides and safer commutes.
