Starting Monday, May 19, city contractors are swinging into action, and yes, that means you'll have to maneuver around some closures and detours. The drill-down is that parts of Carlton Street and Winnipeg Ave are going to be off-limits through Wednesday, May 21, according to a public notice from the City of Duluth.
For those of you driving the young scholars to Lincoln Park Middle School, you'll need to come at it from the west via Carlton Street – no exceptions. The good news? Crossings of Third Street at Chestnut Street, Vernon Street, or Restormel Street are staying open for the locals and service trucks that need to get through. And lest you lose your way, the city's got your back with a breadcrumb trail of signed detours to guide you:
Going westbound, you've got a new route of Third Street to 27th Avenue W, hook a right onto Superior Street, then onto Carlton Street, and back to W Third Street/Grand Avenue. Eastbound, flip it and reverse it: Grand Avenue to Carlton Street, motor down Superior Street to 27th Avenue West, and 27th Avenue West to W Third Street.
But wait, there's more. As one closure ends, another begins. The section between 25th Avenue W and 27th Avenue W is shutting down on Wednesday, May 21, and won't be coming back to life until the end of May 23. If you're aiming for Lincoln Park Drive, come at it from the east if you want to get anywhere close. And, because getting lost isn't on anyone's to-do list, here are the detours they've posted:
Westbound adventurers will be diverted from W Third Street to 24th Avenue W, then to W First Street and ride it out to 27th Avenue W, which will put you back on W Third Street. Eastbound, it's the same shindig, just in the opposite direction: W Third Street to 27th Avenue W, to W First Street, to 24th Avenue W, and finally back to the comforts of W Third Street. So, brace for some "fun" rerouting and plan your detours accordingly.
It's important to keep in mind, as these closures weave their way through your daily routine, they're at the mercy of the unpredictable – dates could change without a whisper of warning. For those pounding the pavement, mind the closed sidewalks and keep an eye out for those re-routing signs. If you're hitting the road, consider this your cue to look for alternate routes if you want to dodge the detour dance through Lincoln Park. After all, who wants to be stuck rerouting when you could be out doing... literally anything else?
