The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development is paving the way for statewide infrastructure improvements, with 24 projects receiving bids last month amounting to a hefty sum of $150.3 million. According to an announcement made by the DOTD, 19 contractors have stepped up with the lowest bids for their respective projects, which range from bridge replacements to congestion mitigation efforts.

Key projects include the Steep Bayou Bridge replacement in Ouachita Parish, with a bid of over $3.2 million, and a major railroad overpass on U.S. 90 in Iberia Parish that fetched a $41 million bid. In contrast, small still vital, joint repairs on the Huey P. Long Bridge in Jefferson Parish came in just under half a million dollars. As reported by the DOTD, bids were received for these and several other important infrastructure projects across the state.

For pavement and overlay, the bids reflected the need for extensive work in Natchitoches Parish on LA 9, costing over $7 million, and in Caddo Parish on U.S. 171, with a bid of almost $10 million. Efforts to mitigate congestion and boost safety are also underway, as demonstrated by a project on U.S. 167 and U.S. 71 in Rapides Parish that involves installing fiber optic conduit/cable and CCTV systems.

Not to be overlooked are the contingency contracts for disaster debris removal, vital in the aftermath of natural calamities, with bids totaling upwards of $37 million across numerous parishes. The lowest bid for litter and debris work along state highways came in at about $833,000. With ongoing increases in supply chain and workforce issues, DOTD emphasized that they will monitor bids closely and may choose to re-bid projects if necessary.

Prioritization of these construction endeavors is a multi-faceted process, taking into account the condition of roads and bridges, urgency of improvement, traffic type and volume, crash records, and damage from unforeseeable emergencies, among other factors. The contracts will be finalized within the next 30 days, provided the bids fall within an acceptable range or budget.
