Tragedy struck a Lauderdale Lakes neighborhood when a boat caught fire, seriously injuring one man, with the incident occurring outside of a home along the 3500 block of Northwest 35th Street just before 6:30 p.m. yesterday. Broward Sheriff's Fire Rescue teams faced a 20-foot vessel fully engulfed in flames, which they managed to extinguish before it caused more than minor damage to the nearby home, as reported by WSVN.
According to a statement obtained by NBC6, the smoke from the blaze was visible from a distance and threatened nearby residences, "It was pretty bad because the wind was so strong, I thought the other house was going to catch on fire because it was blowing towards the house." Area resident Maureen Charles detailed to WSVN, “My sister just went into the door, screaming, ‘There’s a fire,’ so I ran out and the fire was – it was coming across here very fast, and it was very massive.”
The urgent need to transport the injured man to Broward Health Medical Center required an airlift, highlighting the severity of his condition, though as of the time of reporting, his precise medical status remains unknown, with Local10 noting that officials had yet to provide an update.
Meanwhile, community members gathered in support, comforting one another and looking on in horror as the fire unfolded, the charred evidence of the incident prompting immediate thoughts of the man's recovery, as one neighbor expressed to NBC6, "Sending prayers." The cause of the fire is under active investigation by the State Fire Marshal’s Office; their findings are pending. While the fire was contained, surrounding structures were spared any significant harm. Aleisha Raymond articulated the profound impact, telling NBC Miami, "I saw huge flames, the street was covered in black smoke, the sky basically turned grey."
