Tragedy struck at Ocean Beach near Lawton yesterday as a man attempting a daring rescue of a dog from the surf line lost his life, despite the brave efforts of two women who came to his aid. The San Francisco Fire Department (SFFDPIO) confirmed they received emergency calls regarding the incident, detailing that a fully clothed adult male entered the water for unclear reasons but was distressed.

The situation escalated quickly, the male, identified only as an adult, already in need of urgent attention, CPR was administered on the beach by two adult females who reportedly effected the rescue after the man collapsed while in the water. According to the SFFDPIO social media update, these witnesses did not hesitate, pulling the man from the ocean and beginning life-saving efforts even as they dialed 911.

Assistance arrived rapidly, with the Golden Gate National Recreation Area's Ocean Rescue team arriving within two minutes of the dispatch and continuing CPR. The SFFD and its paramedics followed shortly, four minutes after dispatch, to take over with advanced lifesaving procedures. The man was transported to a local hospital in critical condition, but despite the strenuous attempts to save his life, he ultimately succumbed to his injuries, as stated by the fire department.

The dog managed to survive, exiting the water unaided and unharmed. The San Francisco Fire Department highlighted the incident as a stern warning about the dangers of entering the water for rescue attempts, urging the public to call 911 instead.
