
Last Saturday morning, a man was fatally shot on the 200 block of Forsyth Street near the Garnett MARTA Station in Atlanta. The Atlanta Police Department reports that the incident occurred around 6:00 a.m., and was first detected by a MARTA officer who heard a gunshot from the platform. The officer witnessed a man lying on the sidewalk and another man standing over him, who then fled the scene on foot heading south on Forsyth Street, as noted by FOX 5 Atlanta.
The suspect has been described by authorities as an African American man in his 50s, wearing a multi-colored shirt. Looking over the crime scene, Atlanta News First crews observed multiple officers and at least four crime scene units, with sections of Brotherton and Forsyth Streets being closed for investigation, impacting the witness statements being gathered by Atlanta Police Department Atlanta News First reported.
The victim was identified as a man in his 50s, who did not survive his injuries. Following the incident, Lt. Andrew Smith, Atlanta Police Department homicide commander, stated, "An officer with MARTA was on the platform, heard a gunshot, looked over, and noticed a male lying on the sidewalk with another male standing over him," according to an interview with Atlanta News First. Transit services provided by MARTA and Greyhound bus stations remained operational despite the police activity.
Homicide detectives are now meticulously going through camera footage in hopes of obtaining a clearer description of the suspect. "Homicide detectives are going through camera footage to see they we can get a better description to put out," Lt. Smith told Atlanta News First. The Atlanta Police Department urges anyone with information about the shooting to come forward and contact them.
