A man was shot near Chicago's iconic Wrigley Field on Thursday evening, in a violence that seems out of place in the typically bustling neighborhood known for its sports vibe and jovial revelry. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the 26-year-old victim was sitting outside Murphy’s Bleachers around 7 p.m. when he was caught in the crossfire of a fight between two groups of teens. The man, who reportedly felt severe pain in his left arm, sought refuge inside the bar before being transported to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in fair condition.
The incident unfolded at 3655 N. Sheffield Ave., where officers later found approximately 30 fired shell casings on 956 W. Waveland Ave., a stone's throw from where the shooting occurred. In response to the sounds of gunfire, numerous patrons inside Murphy’s Bleacher ducked for cover, with some hiding behind the bar, "It seemed like the bigger group was walking away, going east, and then I went into the bathroom and like 15-20 seconds later, I just heard a bunch of gunshots. It was crazy," resident Tom Morahan told the Chicago Sun-Times.
Meanwhile, ABC 7 Chicago reports that a person of interest is currently in custody following the incident, which took place in the 900 block of West Waveland Avenue. No additional information was available as Chicago police continued their investigation.
