Miami-Dade Fire Rescue's Blackheart Extrication team fiercely proved their prowess at the North American Vehicle Rescue Association's (NAVRA) National Extrication and ALS Challenge, hosted from April 28 to May 3. According to an announcement by Miami-Dade County, the team snatched the best overall title and will head to Croatia later this year to defend their world championship.

Competing with crews across the United States and Canada, the Blackheart Extrication team excelled in real-world challenges at Palm Beach State College in Lake Worth, FL. With categories designed to stir up the heat in vehicle extrication, trauma care, and incident command, the team's training was mirrored in a pressured environment, aiming to reflect the scenarios they face while serving the public. During the rescue challenges, the team's dominance was evident, securing first-place medals in the complex, rapid, incident command, technical, and medic scenarios, only to be outdone with a third-place win in the standard scenario category.

Amid the camaraderie and stiff competition, the achievements of the Blackheat Extrication team have shone a light on their tactical finesse and commitment to excellence. MDFR Fire Chief Raied “Ray” Jadallah hailed their victory, telling Miami-Dade County, “Our Blackhearts have raised the bar when it comes to rescue and trauma response.”

The Blackheart Extrication team's composition is nothing short of impressive, with Miami-Dade Fire Rescue firefighters Brandon Post, Maggie Castro, Andrew Silverman, Casey Sticco, Nicholas Ryan, and Daniel Sanchez, all led by Lieutenant Renzo Urzola. Skilled in the multifaceted disciplines of Technical Rescue, Urban Search and Rescue (USAR), and Emergency Medical Services (EMS), this team is not just a local force but a global one; having clinched the title as world champions, they're set to represent not just MDFR or NAVRA but also the U.S. in the ultimate theatre of world rescue and trauma challenge happening in Karlovac, Croatia in September 2025.
