Travelers flowing through Miami International Airport (MIA) can anticipate smoother journeys and more room to roam as Miami-Dade County Commissioners stamp approval on a hefty expansion project. According to WSVN, over $600 million will be poured into constructing a new terminal, Concourse K, with groundbreaking set for this summer and the aim for the terminal to be functional by spring 2029.

The initiative, part of a sprawling $9 billion modernization plan for MIA, is the first major terminal expansion the airport has seen since 2007. The concourse is expected to bolster the gate count, refine the baggage systems, and upgrade the airfield infrastructure, all in reply to the increased passenger and cargo volumes the airport grapples with. In 2024 alone, MIA serviced close to 56 million passengers and managed over 3 million tons of freight, "But has ambitions of accommodating up to 77 million passengers annually by 2040," as Aviation Week reports.

Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava heralded the expansion, “MIA has not seen a terminal expansion since 2007, making this a truly transformative milestone for our airport.” In her words, as quoted by Aviation Week, "The launch of Concourse K will not only increase capacity and create thousands of new jobs, but also reinforce MIA's role as a premier global gateway."

The expansion project, handled by Lemartec-NV2A as the chosen general contractor and Perez & Perez Architects Planners taking the reins as lead architects will feature six new domestic gates, two baggage make-up carousels, and a bevy of infrastructure enhancements. Also, a ground support equipment maintenance facility, and a merge of baggage systems across terminals is on the drawing board. It's a broad sweep of upgrades with American Airlines at the forefront, commanding a resounding 61.4% of all departing seats from MIA in May 2025; Delta Air Lines tails with a 6.9% share, followed by United Airlines housing a 3.4% share, according to Aviation Week.
