Miami-Dade County is set to observe Memorial Day with a series of events and service closures aimed at honoring the military personnel who have laid down their lives in service to the nation. According to an official notice from the county government, Miami-Dade County offices and libraries will be closed on Memorial Day, Monday, May 26, in respect of these heroes whose ultimate sacrifice helps to preserve our freedoms.
However, not all services will be halted; Solid Waste Management will continue to collect curbside garbage and recycling on the holiday. Miami-Dade Transit is also prepared to operate on a Sunday schedule to accommodate residents who might still need to move around the city. Making special arrangements to acknowledge the holiday, the Hyundai Air & Sea Show is set to take place May 24-25, providing entertainment while paying tribute to the country’s military and first responders.
For those looking to engage in the city's rich historical and natural environments, the Deering Estate is offering reduced general admission, marked down to $8, throughout the Memorial Day Weekend. An initiative in cooperation with Blue Star Museums allows for complimentary entry to the estate for active duty military personnel and up to five family members from Armed Forces Day through to Labor Day, as outlined in the county's announcement.
Zoo Miami is also stepping in to honor active military and veterans with its 'Honor the Brave' event from May 23-26, where showing a valid photo I.D. grants free admission to servicemen and servicewomen, with accompanying guests receiving 50 percent off admissions. Tickets must be purchased at the gate to take advantage of this offer. In the spirit of cultural appreciation, residents might be inclined also to explore Miami Attraction & Museum Months, which extends through May 31, to enjoy the numerous museums and attractions at discounted rates.
Ahead of the upcoming holiday, the county urges residents to plan accordingly, especially those intending to visit marinas, beaches, parks, or atoll pools, to avoid heavy traffic. With the unofficial start of summer kicking off, Miami-Dade Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces is ready for people to dive into the celebrations while observing important safety measures. The county has provided a variety of safety tips, including boating, summer, pool, and barbecue grilling guidelines, to ensure a safe and enjoyable weekend for all.
