In a tribute to a local hero, Miami has renamed a street after Luther "Uncle Luke" Campbell, recognizing his influence on the music industry, his defense of free speech, and his community involvement. The new "Luther Campbell Way" graces the corner of NW 11th Avenue and NW 58th Street, situated in the Liberty City neighborhood that Campbell grew up in. Mayor Francis Suarez, who sponsored the commemorative naming, highlighted Campbell's contributions beyond his notable presence in the Southern hip-hop circuit as a member of 2 Live Crew and a community advocate.
The ceremony, reportedly attended by civic leaders and residents, was a homecoming moment for Campbell. It was in Liberty City that he began his journey, only to become a well-known figure in music and a defender of First Amendment rights. According to the city's announcement, Campbell reflected on what the honor meant to him, saying, "This is where it all started — right here in Liberty City. To have this honor in my own neighborhood means everything to me." He stressed his commitment to uplifting his city and vowed to persistently continue his work.
Mayor Suarez lauded Campbell's impactful legacy during the unveiling, acknowledging the broad spectrum of Campbell's influence. "Luther Campbell’s legacy is about more than music — it’s about standing up for what you believe in, lifting up your community, and leaving a mark that will inspire generations to come," Suarez said, as noted in the city's official press release. The street naming is a gesture intended to publicly acknowledge Campbell's steadfast advocacy and engagement in local educational and youth sports programs. As Campbell told the gathering, “I’ve always fought for my city, and I’ll keep doing that every day.”
