As Miami braces for another sweltering summer, officials have launched a network of Cooling Centers to provide relief during the arduous stretch of the Extreme Heat Season, which now spans from today through October 31. The City of Miami initiated these centers back in 2022, recognizing the increasing occurrence of heat waves and their repercussions on urban populations. According to the City of Miami's announcement, temperatures are known to hover above 90°F for approximately 130 days annually, making it a glaring concern for resident safety and health.
"As we enter our extreme heat season, it’s critical that we take proactive steps to protect our most vulnerable residents. The launch of these Cooling Centers is a testament to our commitment to building a safer, more resilient Miami for everyone," Mayor Francis X. Suarez said in a statement obtained by the City of Miami. The initiative is part of the broader "Miami Forever Climate Ready: Extreme Heat Plan," pinpointing the locations of these centers at select parks, guaranteeing easy access for those in higher-risk sectors.
The Office of Resilience and Sustainability collaborated closely with the Department of Parks and Recreation and the Department of Fire-Rescue Division of Emergency Management to strategically select these parks, ensuring they serve the neediest without duplicating services offered by Miami-Dade County’s network. In 2024, Miami-Dade County expanded its Cooling Center initiative to incorporate library locations – yet, the current addition of the ten parks-based centers denotes a further step towards comprehensive coverage for the city's denizens.
"While we encourage residents and visitors to get outdoors and enjoy our beautiful City, we recognize the importance of having a safe and inviting area to cool off during this extreme heat season. Parks play an integral role in leisure and recreational access, and we are happy to work side by side with the other City Departments to provide such a vital service for our residents and visitors,” Interim Parks & Recreation Director LaClevia Morley told the City of Miami. Each Cooling Center is equipped with provisions ranging from air-conditioning and drinking water to informational resources and heat awareness materials.
For those needing to escape the heat, details regarding operating hours and exact locations of these Cooling Centers are available on the city’s official website, alongside a public service announcement detailing the initiative.
