On Peace Officer Memorial Day, the Modesto Police Department used social media to honor officers who died in the line of duty. The department recognized Officers Mason Lewis and Jordan Pershall for completing the Police Unity Tour. The nearly 300-mile bike ride went from New Jersey to Washington, D.C., with about 3,000 participants, including law enforcement officers and surviving family members, as reported by the Modesto Police Department.
The effort raised $2.2 million for the National Law Enforcement Memorial. "Together, they raised $2.2 million to support the National Law Enforcement Memorial, ensuring our fallen heroes are never forgotten," the department stated. During the tour, Lewis and Pershall met DJ Daniel, a young person who has faced significant challenges, as stated by the Modesto Police Department.
DJ Daniel was diagnosed with cancer in 2018. Since then, he has been sworn in by over 1,000 agencies across the United States. "Since being diagnosed with cancer in 2018, Daniel has dedicated his life to raising awareness for childhood cancer and spreading hope and inspiration wherever he goes." According to the Modesto Police Department on their Facebook page, Daniel was recognized during the Police Unity Tour, an event held to honor those who have died in the line of duty. "Today, and every day, we remember and ride for those who can no longer ride with us," the department stated. Officers Mason Lewis and Jordan Pershall were among those remembered.
