Residents of Morristown are being targeted by a phone scam, as the Morristown Police Department (MPD) has issued a warning regarding fraudulent calls, where the perpetrators are impersonating law enforcement officials to extract money on the pretense of unpaid citations or missed jury duty. According to a social media post shared by the City of Morristown - Government, scammers have been exploiting the credibility of an MPD phone number to lend legitimacy to their scheme.

In this cunning plot, victimized individuals have reported the call display showing a number recognized as belonging to the MPD, namely 423-585-2710. However, the police department clarifies that although the number is indeed theirs, it should not appear on caller ID since all legitimate calls are managed through a switchboard. The scam involves the fraudster alleging that a warrant has been issued against the call receiver – whether for failing to show up for jury duty or settling an outstanding citation – and that immediate payment is demanded. Yet this is far from the way MPD operates.

"As always, the MPD will never call asking for money for any type of warrant or unpaid citation," the Facebook post states, reaffirming the department's official procedures.
