The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office is looking into the details of a police pursuit which began in Metairie and concluded near Ponchatoula on Interstate 55. Taking place early Friday morning, the episode involved the discharging of at least one weapon, as reported by the WDSU.
An encounter with a deputy and a suspect driving a vehicle with no license plate sparked the pursuit near Yale and Hudson streets in Metairie. The suspect, now identified as Umfrey, hurled expletives at the deputy, refusing to heed commands before attempting to evade with a female companion, despite the deputy's use of a stun gun, according to NOLA.com. During the chaos, no injuries were reported following the deputy's firing.
The chase, descending into a violent struggle, culminated with Umfrey's arrest and subsequent transportation to the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center. As reported by WWLTV, the suspect is facing a slew of charges including operating a motor vehicle while impaired, improper lane usage, resisting an officer, and other serious offenses.
