The ongoing salmonella outbreak linked to cucumbers has triggered an expansive recall effort, affecting numerous brands and stores across various states. According to NBC Chicago, the outbreak is connected to cucumbers grown by Florida-based Bedner Growers and distributed by Fresh Start Produce Sales.
With 26 reported cases of illness across 15 states, retailers including Kroger, Harris Teeter, and Walmart have been pulling affected products from their shelves. The cucumbers in question were distributed between April 29, and May 19, and sold at several locations, including Bedner’s Farm Fresh Market at three Florida spots. NBC Chicago's report emphasized that additional recalls are being conducted by companies that used or repackaged recalled cucumbers grown by Bedner Growers, Inc.
As the investigation of the salmonella outbreak unfolds, consumers are advised to stay informed about the products they purchase. The FDA's alert warns that: "Cucumbers may have been sold individually or in smaller packages, with or without a label that may not bear the same brand, product name, or best by date." Reported symptoms of salmonella infection include diarrhea, fever, severe vomiting, dehydration, and stomach cramps, starting as early as six hours after consumption. The outbreak has led to at least nine hospitalizations, stated NBC Chicago.
Meanwhile, USA Today confirmed that Walmart has recalled Marketside cucumber products in select stores located in Texas. If you've purchased cucumbers recently, it's recommended to check if they are part of the recall and return recalled products to the point of sale for a refund. Affected states include Alabama, California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, North Carolina, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.
