The New Orleans Police Department is actively investigating an incident after a body was discovered near the Canal Street Ferry terminal yesterday afternoon. WDSU reports that the body was found around 3:21 p.m., with a security guard being the one to encounter the deceased.
Further details are sparse as authorities have yet to release the identity of the individual found. The NOPD, according to WGNO, received a report of the body being found in the water near the terminal. Despite the grim discovery, the Regional Transit Authority, through Kelder Summers, confirmed that ferry services were not to be suspended following the incident.
At the moment, the death is being handled as an "unclassified death," a term the NOPD uses to describe cases where the cause or manner of death remains unknown. As such, detectives are painstakingly piecing together the narrative of what transpired, attempting to establish whether foul play was involved. In a statement obtained by WWLTV, the official NOPD communication highlighted that the circumstances surrounding the man's death remain under investigation.
