Travelers flying out of Oakland might notice a significant change next time they check in for their flights. The Oakland Airport (OAK) has put the finishing touches on its Terminal 1 check-in lobby, giving it a thoroughly modern refresh designed to enhance the passenger experience. According to a press release from the Port of Oakland, the renovation has lightened up the space with new finishes, LED lighting, and a renewed open-air feel.

“This much-needed renovation of our 1962 facility has significantly modernized the look and feel of the pre-security area of the terminal," said Port of Oakland Director of Aviation Craig Simon, reflecting the ongoing efforts to revamp OAK, as cited by the Port of Oakland. Passengers are expected to enjoy the updated surroundings along with other recent enhancements. The revamped lobby includes new check-in counters, a freshly painted ceiling, and a redesign of the overhead soffit that, intended to ease the movement of passengers, has brought a new atmospheric quality into play.

Turner Construction executed the remodeling, with HNTB credited for the design aesthetics. Airlines such as Hawaiian Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and Alaska Airlines, among others, will now operate from these new installations. The upgrade's phased approach, spanning four distinct stages, aimed to keep disruptions to travelers and air services as minimal as possible. Airlines were temporarily relocated during construction as their stations received the upgrade.

Notably, the workforce that brought this project to fruition represented the local spirit; approximately 30 percent hailed from the Port’s Local Business Area, encompassing Alameda and Contra Costa Counties. Around 75 percent of the project was undertaken by Very Small Business Enterprises (VSBE), a figure proudly cited by the Port for nearly quadrupling their initial participation target. Having completed these enhancements, OAK's Terminal 1 sets the stage where the intersection of modernity and local contribution defines an evolved travel experience. The airport has also introduced new dining and retail options, updated terminal furniture and flooring, and a restroom renovation project that is still underway.
