An incident in Ogden, involving a man armed with knives and police officers, culminated in the suspect being shot and hospitalized early Tuesday morning. According to KUTV, the 37-year-old man was encountered by an Ogden Police Department officer while walking in the street on the 2200 block of Wall Avenue at around 2:10 a.m.
During this engagement, the man reportedly armed himself with a pair of knives and advanced towards the officer. As the situation escalated, the officer discharged his weapon, striking the suspect. The individual was then transported to the hospital and is said to be in stable condition, as per ABC4. The officer involved was not injured during the incident.
Further details indicate that the officer had given the suspect orders that he did not comply with. "The suspect advanced towards the officer despite orders not to do so. The officer fired his handgun, striking the suspect," as reported by ABC4. In the wake of the shooting, a procedure has been set in motion; the Weber County Attorney's Office has been charged with investigating the incident.
The yet-to-be-identified man's actions and subsequent shooting prompt an examination into law enforcement's quick-response decisions under pressure. "Police officers operate in rapidly evolving and often dangerous situations on a daily basis, consistently placing themselves in harm's way. We are proud of the professionalism and composure they demonstrate in the face of such complex and challenging circumstances," police said, according to KSL. The officer who discharged his weapon has been placed on administrative leave, which follows the standard protocol in such matters.
