The Supreme Court of Ohio is leaning heavily into the future with its latest Annual Report, showcasing a year of pushing boundaries and upgrading across the board to improve the administration of justice. The theme of the 2024 Annual Report, "Dynamic Innovation in the Administration of Justice: Perpetual Change Requires Continuous Quality Improvement," seems more than apt as it unfolds the Court's efforts to remain agile and efficient while steadfastly serving Ohioans.
In a society where change is as sure as the sunrise, the Ohio Supreme Court isn't just keeping pace; it's setting the pace. Chief Justice Sharon L. Kennedy outlined the Court's approach, stating that "Every day, the Court embraces the challenges and opportunities of change to ensure justice is accessible, fair, and efficient," according to a release on the Court's official website. These aren't mere words, as the report details the Court's strides in enhancing e-filing capabilities, expediting case resolutions, and fortifying civic education and engagement.
Notably, the Ohio justice system took significant steps forward in 2024 by offering new tools for local courts, like improved reporting mechanisms to the Bureau of Criminal Investigation and grants surpassing $2.8 million to facilitate tech upgrades, as reported in the Annual Report. The impact of these improvements ranges from inner apparatus like the Judicial Assignment Program, which reinforces the timely administration of justice, to outreach initiatives, including the inaugural Kids Summit and the impactful Lean Forward Veterans Summit and Specialized Dockets Conference.
Among the advancements, the Advisory Committee to the Commission on the Rules of Practice and Procedure and the Supreme Court Practice Rules Committee laid the foundation to further Marsy’s Law throughout Ohio's court system. "The spirit of this year’s theme lies in perpetual self-assessment and innovation," Chief Justice Kennedy emphasized, as the Court's official website mentioned.
