In a bold move designed to fortify the leadership capabilities of local school boards across Oklahoma, the Oklahoma State Department of Education (OSDE) announced a free training initiative that aims to strengthen local school governance without burdening district resources. Spearheaded by Superintendent Ryan Walters, this program seeks to provide board members with practical and relevant training tailored to meet the nuanced demands of their roles—the training will include sessions that tap into the realities of school board governance.
The OSDE's commitment to improving communication channels and setting clear expectations between districts and school boards is evident in this initiative, and the effort is accentuated by the complementary nature of the offered education, dispensed at no cost to the districts. Superintendent Ryan Walters articulated the department's mission, saying, "We are committed to empowering Oklahoma school boards with the tools they need to lead effectively," in a statement released on the OSDE website, and emphasizing the core belief that "effective governance should never come at a cost to our schools and students."
Marking another step in this initiative, OSDE is launching the Annual Governance Conference, which has been scheduled for July 31 and August 1, 2025, at the University of Central Oklahoma Nigh Center. The conference, previously recognized as the Annual Administrative Conference, includes a dedicated training day for new members on July 31, while incumbent board members will join on August 1 for additional sessions designed to benefit all levels of experience.
Details about the specific session topics and how to register for the conference are expected to be released soon, with the OSDE appreciating the dedication of school board members to serving Oklahoma’s students.
