An 18-year-old from Oklahoma named Samuel Memphis Williams tragically drowned yesterday while swimming at Sandy Cove Beach on Canton Lake. According to the report from KOKH FOX25, Williams was attempting to retrieve a ball from the lake when he began to struggle and called out for help.
Unfortunately, his efforts to stay afloat were in vain, and after he went underwater, he did not resurface. Emergency crews were dispatched to the scene, and after an exhaustive search, Samuel Williams was pronounced dead after being recovered from the water.
In what appeared to be a calm area, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol stated that the incident occurred in water that was 10 feet deep with "little to no waves," as detailed in a News On 6 article. The same source noted that Williams was without a life jacket when he drowned.
The drowning has raised concerns about water safety and the necessity to always wear a life jacket, especially when engaging in aquatic activities. Witnesses said that the recovery of Williams' body occurred roughly 30 minutes after the initial distress calls were heard.
