An apartment fire on the north side of Indianapolis has left one man injured and several residents without a place to call home, including seven adults and one juvenile. The Indianapolis Fire Department (IFD) responded to the emergency in the 9300 block of Racquet Ball Way around 7:56 p.m. Friday night. Heavy smoke and flames were seen by firefighters on arrival, engulfing part of an apartment complex, as reported by FOX59.
According to IFD, their crews managed to get the fire under control within 25 minutes. Alongside the human toll, the tragedy also claimed the lives of three pets. Standing outside the apartment complex when emergency services arrived on the scene, an injured man was transported to Ascension St. Vincent Hospital, WTHR reported.
The specifics of the fire's cause remain under investigation, with no immediate word from authorities on how the blaze started. Meanwhile, IFD officials are said to be working with the apartment manager to secure shelter for those displaced by the fire, as highlighted by a Facebook post from the department and covered by WRTV. While the fire's aftermath left a community reeling, the swift response of the IFD prevented further injuries and potential loss of life.
Three animals did not survive the incident, a sorrowful fact woven into this story of sudden devastation.
