In response to increasing wildfire threats, Oregon Governor Tina Kotek has signed an agreement to enhance community defenses against wildfires. The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) is a partnership between the Oregon State Fire Marshal (OSFM) and IBHS aimed at promoting resilience at the neighborhood level throughout the state. The initiative focuses on using insights from past wildfire seasons to improve risk mitigation, preparedness, and response strategies.
"We must apply the lessons learned from years past in our wildfire response and our recovery: prioritizing wildfire risk mitigation, readiness, response and coordination through a comprehensive, statewide approach," Governor Kotek asserted. IBHS offers its expertise in wildfire research, playing a key role in shaping science-based policies and community education to reduce risks. Their Wildfire Prepared program, recognized for its innovative approach, seeks to set a standard for wildfire mitigation by blending cutting-edge research with actionable strategies, as reported by the Governor's office.
According to State Fire Marshal Mariana Ruiz-Temple, the partnership marks a significant change in how the state prepares for wildfire threats. "This is a watershed moment as we move to a different approach in protecting Oregonians and communities for the future," Ruiz-Temple told the Governor's office. Pivoting toward proactive engagement, the MOU sets the stage for collaborative post-fire analysis, scientific consultancy on mitigation strategies, and integration of wildfire science into community-led actions and grant programs.
Oregon State Insurance Commissioner Andrew R. Stolfi further highlighted the importance of science and data in wildfire prevention, emphasizing the economic advantages of the partnership. "When consumers and the state invest in reducing wildfire risk, insurers – guided by data and science – should reflect that progress in rating and underwriting, helping to keep coverage available and affordable for Oregonians," Stolfi noted in the press release, pointing out the intersection between environmental safety measures and financial incentives.
IBHS President and CEO Roy Wright is confident about the positive outcomes of the partnership. "Oregon is leaning in, implementing a scalable, research-based mitigation system that will bring greater wildfire resilience to neighborhoods across the state at risk to wildfire," Wright remarked. With a focus on advancing from Firewise USA recognition to the broader goal of achieving Wildfire Prepared Neighborhood designation, Oregon is set to significantly enhance its defenses against wildfires, according to a statement obtained by the Governor's office.
