A tragic incident occurred Saturday night when a pedestrian was struck and killed on Interstate 485 in southwest Charlotte. MEDIC responded to the scene near Steele Creek Road around 9 p.m., where the individual was pronounced dead, reports WSOC-TV. The identity of the deceased has yet to be released pending notification of next of kin.
Following the accident, the outer loop of I-485 was shut down for an extended period, heavily impacting late-night traffic. The North Carolina Department of Transportation initially anticipated a closure until around 11:30 p.m. However, the site wasn't to fully clear until closer to 1 a.m. yesterday, as per the WCNC report.
Authorities, including the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, were swiftly on site to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident. While details are scant, the CMPD had advised travelers to seek alternative routes as parts of the highway remained cordoned off for the investigation, as WBTV reported.
As of this writing, officials have not to yet comment on what may have led to the tragic event, and inquiries into the crash are ongoing. We expect more information to emerge as investigators piece together the events of that night. Updates will be provided as they become available, affirms WSOC-TV.
