Teachers in the City of Phoenix are about to get schooled in water conservation this summer. The Phoenix Water Services Department is rolling out a new initiative, Water Smart Teaching workshops, designed to supply high school educators with the knowledge and tools to weave water conservation lessons into their classrooms. Starting this June, these interactive workshops offer hands-on activities and lesson plans tailored to engage students on the critical topic of water stewardship.
According to an announcement made by the City of Phoenix, these workshops are not only aimed to educate but also to empower the youth with the sustainability skills needed to secure their future. "Ensuring that youth have the tools they need to understand the importance of protecting our water resources is vital for future generations,” Ginny Svec, a Water Resource Specialist, said in a statement that was obtained by the Phoenix Water Services Department. Each workshop session is scheduled to take place at Burton Barr Library, with options for teachers to attend either in person or virtually.
The workshop series will cover a diverse range of water-related topics, beginning with "Phoenix Water and Water in the West," featuring a real-world challenge simulation to kick off the first session. Following sessions will delve into local water conservation strategies and hands-on activities such as calculating water footprints and water resource management. Teachers can snag two CEU hours per session, adding up to a potential eight CEUs for those committed to attending all four workshops. Furthermore, those who attend at least three of the four will be rewarded not just with a certificate but also the chance to win a water treatment plant tour for their classroom, as per the City of Phoenix.
Interested educators must be in the high school echelon and employed within the City of Phoenix school district. It's not mandatory to attend every session, offering some flexibility to those juggling tight schedules. Full details about the program and registration can be found on the Phoenix Water Smart Teaching website.
The City of Phoenix Water Services Department holds the torch for providing high-quality water services and is committed to maintaining a sustainable and resilient water supply for Phoenix's residents and businesses. Passionate about conservation and innovation, the department is laying down educational pathways like the Water Smart Teaching workshops as an investment in the conservation culture of tomorrow.
