A routine traffic stop on Cactus Road erupted into violence Sunday afternoon, resulting in an officer and a suspect being hospitalized after a shooting incident, as reported by FOX 10 Phoenix. The confrontation began when a Phoenix officer, assigned to the Desert Horizon Precinct, pulled over a driver who had committed a traffic violation, the specifics of which have not been detailed by authorities.
The situation escalated quickly with the man exiting his vehicle and engaging in a heated argument with the officer, during this contentious encounter, rather than abiding by the officer's request for a driver's license and listening to the rationale for the stop, the man opted to amplify his verbal aggression and initiated a physical assault on the law enforcement official, according to a news release from Phoenix Police Department.
Amid the altercation, a passerby attempted to intervene and separate the man from the officer; nonetheless, the man tried to seize the officer's weapon, which led to the officer discharging his firearm and striking the suspect in the lower half of his body, as reported by Phoenix police. Both the officer and the man were subsequently taken to the hospital, where they received treatment for their injuries, with the man's wounds being non-life-threatening and the officer having been released, as stated by FOX 10 Phoenix.
Following the incident, a stretch of Cactus Road found itself cordoned off as detectives descended upon the scene, engaging in the meticulous process of investigation, and Phoenix Police Sgt. Lorraine Fernandez assured the public, saying, "Our detectives are out here, they're going to do their absolute best at conducting this investigation and if it requires staying out here for multiple hours to get this right then that's what we're going to do" in a conversation with FOX 10 Phoenix.
