Phoenix is beating the heat with color and creativity, as the City of Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture launched ¡Sombra! Experiments in Shade this summer. The series began with the dynamic installation, Rincón de Color, at Cielito Park, unveiled on April 19th. The project, a joint effort by artists Jose Benavides, Joe Ray, and students from the MEChA club at Alhambra High School, is both a cultural nod and a cooling haven in the desert city's sweltering climate.

The structure is a functional piece designed to give Phoenix residents a break from the relentless sun. With a canopy blocking 95% of UV rays and hand-painted panels that move with the sun, Rincón de Color not only offers shade but a significant temperature drop, too. The City of Phoenix Heat Response & Mitigation Office recorded a staggering "temperature drop of up to 27 degrees beneath the shade," a boon for anyone looking to escape the heat. Plus, a solar-powered misting system has been installed to up the ante on the cool factor.

Joining the previously reported art was a spread of festivities during the kick-off celebration, with an array of community-engaging activities. "Guests enjoyed free street tacos from Taqueria Jalisco, refreshing aguas frescas, and cooling bites like corn salad and fresh fruit provided by ¡AGUAS! PHX," recounted the Phoenix's news release. Visitors could catch remarks from city officials, interact with hands-on booths, and absorb the vibrant culture through art exhibitions and live music, encapsulating a genuine community celebration.

For art aficionados and those simply seeking refuge from the scorch, Rincón de Color will remain at Cielito Park until September 20th, 2025, the first of nine public art unveilings slated for ¡Sombra! Experiments in Shade. According to the same Phoenix news release, "To find upcoming events visit sombraphx.org."
