A recent five-day operation conducted by the Central Precinct of the Portland Police Bureau (PPB), geared towards addressing various criminal behaviors, particularly drug-related offenses, has reported significant outcomes. The mission, which was part of the Multnomah County Coordinated Care Pathway Center's deflection program, aimed to redirect drug users towards addiction services and support, keeping them out of the justice system. During the operation, 78 individuals were steered to deflection, according to a news release by the Portland Police Bureau.
In addition to utilizing the PPB’s Mobile Command vehicle as a hub for the mission, the efforts sought to reassure the community by demonstrating a visible police presence. Officers patrolled different hotspots where heightened criminal activity had been reported and where locals had asked for enforcement. To both deter crime and to alleviate the public's fear of it, this mission saw police to swiftly and markedly act on observed violations. Monday's focus on West Burnside Street and Southwest 12th Avenue led to seven arrests and the recovery of illicit substances and stolen goods.
The operation continued through the week, moving locations daily, with Tuesday featuring a crackdown around Couch Park, where officers confiscated weapons and drugs, resulting in three arrests and twelve deflections. The subsequent days witnessed similar police activities, with efforts intensifying on Friday in the South Park Blocks and the Goose Hollow neighborhood. For this mission, Governor Tina Kotek dispatched Oregon State Police to aid the Portland officers, boosting the mission's capacity significantly.
The final day's alliance between PPB and the state troopers led to an impressive count of 39 arrests and 20 deflections, highlighted by a noteworthy traffic stop that yielded a significant amount of methamphetamine. The presence of the Oregon State Police notably augmented the operation's success, with the PPB offering their thanks for the collaboration. As the week wrapped up, mission officers reported a notable decrease in visible criminal activity, suggesting the combined efforts had substantially impacted local crime.
