His tenure with the City of Dallas was marked by his management of Sanitation Services operations, which dealt with an $89 million revenue stream, and his contribution to the $1.05 billion 2017 Capital Bond Program rollout. Abernethy's work has been acknowledged for enhancing operational effectiveness and responsiveness, especially during his time in development services and permitting reform.
