In a move to enhance accessibility for all, Roan Mountain State Park unveiled an all-terrain wheelchair for public use, implementing Tennessee State Parks' initiative to make nature more inclusive. The addition of this wheelchair at Roan Mountain increases the tally to 31 parks across Tennessee providing similar equipment.
"We are delighted to offer this service," said Greer Tidwell, deputy commissioner of Conservation for the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC). "We intend to serve every person who wants to visit our parks, and we are dedicated to making the experience the best it can be for everyone." Tidwell noted the state's provision of funds necessary to bring this initiative to life, thanking Governor Bill Lee, and the Tennessee General Assembly. The wheelchair is said to be capable of navigating diverse landscapes, thereby granting those with mobility impairments access to outdoor activities that were previously beyond reach.
The all-terrain wheelchair can be used independently or with the assistance of a caretaker and is available at no cost to park-goers. However, visitors are encouraged to request the wheelchair in advance due to the possibility of it being previously reserved upon arrival. Roan Mountain State Park is requesting prior notice for use, ensuring more efficient planning for visitors' needs.
Despite the strides in accessibility, it is important to note the lasting impact of Hurricane Helene's devastation from last year. While Roan Mountain State Park has managed to reopen portions of the park, there remain areas still entrenched in recovery, with closures in effect indefinitely. Visitors seeking the tranquility of Roan's natural beauty must thus remain cognizant of the park's ongoing restoration efforts.
To learn more about the wheelchair availability or to plan a visit, individuals can contact Roan Mountain State Park directly. The full list of Tennessee State Parks offering all-terrain wheelchairs and additional information on their services can be found on the TDEC website.
