The Salt Lake City Police Department is currently investigating a tragic incident in the Liberty Wells neighborhood where a very young child was struck and fatally injured by an SUV. According to SLCPD, at around 5:46 p.m., SLC911 received distressing reports of the accident occurring near 350 East Wilson Avenue. The age of the child, so far, has been withheld from the public domain.
The preliminary findings suggest the driver, who has been identified as a family member to the child, hit them while navigating the SUV within a driveway, following these events, the child sustaining critical injuries, emergency responders were swift to provide life-saving efforts, while they awaited police and additional medical assistance but despite paramedics rushing the child to the hospital and advanced medical care attempts, the young victim succumbed to the life-threatening injuries they had incurred. The SLCPD's specialized Collision Analysis & Reconstruction (CAR) Team, alongside the Crime Lab Unit, has taken the lead on this case to piece together the underlying causes of the crash, which at this juncture is believed to have occurred at low speed according to police statements.
As law enforcement officials and forensic experts continue their meticulous work, Wilson Avenue will remain shut down between 300 East and 400 East for an indeterminate number of hours, the road closure permitting detectives to process the scene thoroughly. Understanding the profound impact of such a calamity, SLCPD has also dispatched social workers specially trained in crisis response and a police chaplain to the scene and hospital, reportedly, to offer their support and solace to those hit hardest by this unforeseen disaster.
