County Animal Services and the San Diego Sheriff's deputies executed a search warrant yesterday, impounding nine animals due to immediate health concerns. In an operation underscored by concerns for the well-being of local pets, officials undertook steps meant to ensure a standard of care was upheld.
The investigation was sparked by neglect reports, specifically focusing on a dog believed to have been mistreated. Vaughn Maurice, director of County Animal Services, reported that officers previously instructed Urban Feline's owner, Andres Zepeda, to secure veterinary care for the dog after the initial incident. The advice was clear, and the expectation was set, albeit the outcomes were not as instructed. "The business owner, Andres Zepeda, was advised by an animal control officers at the time of the original investigation to seek veterinary care for the dog and was given time to do so," said Maurice, per the County of San Diego.
When authorities arrived at Urban Feline, they found that the dog from the initial complaint was nowhere to be found. However, their search was not in vain; instead, they discovered five cats and four dogs whose conditions necessitated immediate medical attention. These animals were quickly transported to a veterinarian for evaluation and treatment, as reported by the County of San Diego. These types of interventions reflect the broader mandate of the Department of Animal Services, which strives to quell and rectify instances of animal cruelty or neglect.
